The issue of construction on the SYL canal is fast turning into a ticking bomb. This issue will be the first test of the new Punjab government .
The Supreme Court has sent a very clear message to Punjab that the SYL canal has to be constructed. Punjab has to share the water of Ravi and Beas rivers with Haryana.
Punjab is in political flux till March 11, due to Supreme Court’s tough stand Punjab administration is in a tricky situation. Currently the SAD – BJP government is dealing with this emerging situation.
The state government is in worry because the top court had denied Punjab’s plea. The Supreme Court will pass an order on March 2. The Punjab government wants that the hearing to be postponed until March 11. So that the new government of the Punjab will handle this issue politically, administratively and legally.
The SAD government has already set the stage for a constitutional confrontation with Supreme Court when they have denotified 5,376 acres area which was acquired for the SYL canal.
